Bright Light Projects (BLP), a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of girls young Girls and Boys in Cameroon through education, skills training, and community empowerment initiatives, BLP works towards creating a brighter future for vulnerable girls and Boys fostering sustainable development in their communities. On December 11, 2024, Buea, Cameroon, celebrated the graduation of over 10 young women from its flagship program, the “Girls Shall Rise Program” at the Women Empowerment and Family Center (WEFC) in Buea, on the Theme “Lighting the Path to a Better Tomorrow.” The occasion saw the graduation of 58 trainees from the center with over 10 sponsored by the Bright Light Projects. The ceremony marked a significant milestone in the lives of these beneficiaries, who successfully completed a comprehensive skills training program designed to empower them for future success.The Girls Shall Rise Program, a core initiative of BLP, focuses on providing vulnerable young women with access to education, vocational training, and life skills development. This year’s graduating class completed Fashion Design, Computer Science, and Hotel Catering and Management training. The program also included modules on financial literacy, entrepreneurship, gender equality, and reproductive health to better equip the beneficiaries for future challenges and their integration into the business/entrepreneurial world, which is becoming very competitive in Cameroon and worldwide.
During graduation, trainees, especially those in the fashion designing department, were awarded sewing machines and other items to serve as start-ups for them and enable them to immediately start being productive and practical and generate income to better their lives, families, and communities.
Dignitaries, community leaders, family members, BLP staff, and other partner representatives attended the graduation ceremony. The Women Empowerment and Family Center director addressed the graduates, emphasizing the transformative power of education and skills training and congratulating the women on their remarkable achievements. She highlighted the resilience and determination displayed by the participants throughout the program.
According to the BLP program manager in attendance, the successful completion of the training and subsequent graduation of the beneficiaries, part of its flagship Girls Shall Rise Program, is a testament to BLP’s commitment to empowering girls and young women in Cameroon. He then stated that the organization remains dedicated to creating opportunities for girls to reach their full potential and contribute to the economic and social development of their communities, which is the organization’s mission.
The event also included inspiring testimonials from several graduating beneficiaries, sharing their personal journeys and aspirations for the future. According to Tabot Lauretta, one of the graduating BLP beneficiaries, in her own words, “This training is the best thing that has happened to me, and I believe it is the same for all other trainees. I was at home doing nothing and not even knowing what to do, but today, I can pride myself as a fashion designer thanks to Bright Light Projects, which orientated me on the importance of skill training, sponsored me, and constantly followed up on me and the other beneficiaries to ensure that we complete the training. Today, I am very proud of who I have become and the impact I will create in my family and community, all thanks to Bright Light Projects, who sponsored my training, and the Women Empowerment and Family Center, which trained me”.
The ceremony culminated in the presentation of certificates to the graduates, signifying the completion of their training.
Bright Light Projects extends its heartfelt gratitude to its donors, partners, and volunteers for their unwavering support in making the Girls Shall Rise Program a stand-out program, successful and impactful. Bright Light Projects is more determined to continue its work in empowering more young women and men in the years to come through the Girls Shall Rise Program and the Young Men Entrepreneurship program with skill training in a bid to drive the change that we all desire and the future that we all want.
