On March 22, 2025, Bright Light Projects (BLP), in partnership with The Green Cameroon and ASDEPCO, successfully hosted a one-day training workshop focused on “Smart Farming for a Low-Carbon Future and Economic Growth.” The event brought together over 30 passionate young professionals from diverse fields, including agriculture, environmental engineering, medicine, communications, and law, all united by a shared interest in sustainable agriculture and community development. The workshop aimed to equip participants with practical knowledge and innovative strategies to promote sustainable agricultural practices, encourage local food production and consumption, and reduce reliance on imports and foreign aid. Shing Praise, Program Manager for Bright Light Projects, coordinated the impactful event. “Knowledge sharing through trainings like this is essential for fostering change and building the future we all want,” said Shing Praise in his welcome address, urging participants to actively engage with the material and implement their learnings in their respective communities.

The workshop featured a series of insightful presentations by experts in the field; beginning with “The Agricultural Sector and Its Contribution to Carbon Emissions” by Nsangou R. This presentation highlighted the environmental impact of conventional agricultural practices in Cameroon and emphasized the critical need to adopt sustainable alternatives to mitigate climate change through the reduction of gas emissions.

The second presentation titled “Principles of Aquaculture” by Chinchwe Valery led Participants gained practical knowledge about fish farming, focusing on commonly cultivated species like catfish and tilapia. The presentation emphasized aquaculture’s potential to address the increasing demand for fish in Cameroon and reduce dependence on imports, particularly in light of evolving international relations.

The next presentation on “Sustainable Agricultural Technologies using AI” by Khan Noel, explored the use of artificial intelligence to optimize crop production while minimizing environmental impact. Participants were encouraged to embrace proactive and innovative approaches to address contemporary challenges in agriculture.

Also, the presentation “Waste Management in Agriculture: Turning Waste into Resources” by Warri Bilson provided practical strategies for transforming agricultural waste into valuable resources, promoting a circular economy and reducing environmental pollution. Mr. Bilson stressed the importance of youth participation in waste management initiatives to build a sustainable future. Highlighting the need for action through volunteerism was crucial.

“The Role of Innovative Volunteerism and Networking in Professional Growth” by Yosimbom Jania, focused on the importance of building strategic connections and engaging in innovative volunteerism as crucial elements for career development. Ms. Jania shared her personal experiences and provided practical advice on building strong professional networks.

Following a productive morning session, participants enjoyed a lunch break, providing further opportunities for networking and informal discussion. After the break, Chi Margaret Presented on “Storytelling for Change. This session proved to be highly engaging, emphasizing the transformative power of personal narratives in achieving social change. Chi Margaret expertly guided participants through the art of crafting compelling stories, particularly within the context of project concept notes and business proposals seeking funding. Her key takeaway, “No one can tell your story better than you,” resonated deeply with the audience, inspiring a sense of ownership and agency.

Then came the last lesson of the day on the topic, “An Overview of Agricultural Policies in Cameroon” Presented by Fai Gratitude who provided a comprehensive overview of the legal, policy, and institutional frameworks governing agriculture and environmental protection in Cameroon. She underscored the critical importance of understanding these regulations for participants to engage in impactful advocacy programs that can drive meaningful change towards sustainable development. Her insightful presentation fostered a deeper appreciation for the complex policy landscape and equipped participants with the knowledge necessary to navigate it effectively.

The workshop fostered a dynamic learning environment, with participants actively engaging with the presenters and sharing their own experiences and perspectives.
In closing, the Program Manager for BRIGHT LIGHT PROJECTS and the representative from The Green Cameroon, on behalf of all organizing partners expressed their gratitude to the participants, presenters, and partners for the milestone achieved. They emphasized the importance of translating the workshop learnings into action, urging attendees to become ambassadors of change and to take their newfound knowledge seriously in order to build resilient societies and foster sustainable development in Cameroon.
