Kicking off the 2025–2026 academic year with unstoppable momentum, the Bright Light Projects (BLP) Buea team successfully launched our flagship Our Environment, Our Future Environmental School Program at Gratitude Islamic School. In a session brimming with energy, over 250 students actively engaged alongside the school’s dedicated Environmental Club teacher coordinator, marking a vibrant and collaborative start to nurturing the next generation of eco-stewards. This initiative, inspired by the program’s proven impact in neighboring schools such as St. Rita Cascia and Fonic Comprehensive, where hands-on cleanups and STEM integrations have sparked community-wide change, underscores BLP’s growing footprint in Cameroon’s Southwest Region.
The inaugural gathering focused on core environmental themes: the critical need for protection, sustainability, and responsible practices that extend from school grounds to broader communities. Through lively, interactive discussions and practical activities such as brainstorming waste-reduction strategies and tree-care basics, students explored their pivotal role in safeguarding ecosystems. This foundation-setting event aligns seamlessly with BLP’s Reforestation Hope Projects, which aim to restore 100 hectares of degraded land across Cameroon and Sierra Leone by 2028, while boosting food self-sufficiency through agroforestry that increases harvest resilience by up to 20%.
A Roadmap to Resilience: Weekly Wins Ahead
As a hallmark of BLP’s environmental stewardship campaign, Our Environment, Our Future now spans 84 schools and has empowered 12,450+ students in Cameroon’s Northwest and Southwest regions, plus 25 in northern Makeni, Sierra Leone. We’ve planted 6,500+ saplings to date, fostering skills in composting, pollution prevention, and STEM-driven monitoring, all tied to the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. Looking ahead, Gratitude Islamic School will host environmental activities every Monday, blending continuous learning, hands-on tree-planting, and progress tracking to cultivate self-reliant young leaders. The strong partnership between BLP, students, and administration underscores our shared vision: a sustainable school environment that inspires lasting change. One student summed it up: “We’re not just learning we’re leading the way to a greener world!”
We invite donors, volunteers, and partners to fuel this expansion, contribute supplies for Monday sessions, or sponsor eco-clubs today!
