From Savings to Investment: Rosint Women Mark Third Annual VSLA Savings Milestone

ROSINT COMMUNITY, BOMBALI DISTRICT, SIERRA LEONE — September 11, 2026: Bright Light Projects Sierra Leone (BLPSL) joined members of the Rosint Community Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) for the opening of their third annual savings box, marking another important milestone in the group’s journey toward financial inclusion, economic empowerment, and community resilience.

Established in 2023, the VSLA began as a simple community savings mechanism. Three years later, members have significantly grown their collective savings while developing a stronger culture of financial discipline, access to community-based credit, and collective economic responsibility. The annual opening of the savings box gives members a chance to see the tangible results of months of commitment, discipline, and sacrifice.

For BLP, however, the next stage is about helping members move from saving to investing.

With the group’s savings capacity increasing, BLPSL plans to facilitate financial literacy and banking education in partnership with a formal financial institution. Bank representatives would be invited to help members understand account ownership, formal savings, financial services, and the benefits of building a relationship with the banking system. BLP also intends to provide modest support to open the group’s account, helping bridge community-based savings and formal financial inclusion.

From VSLA to Smart Agriculture

The milestone also demonstrates the growing connection between the VSLA and BLP’s VSLA Smart Agriculture Initiative.

Rather than treating savings and agriculture as separate interventions, BLP is supporting communities to use the financial strength developed through their VSLAs to create productive livelihood opportunities. Members will be encouraged to explore how an agreed portion of appropriate group funds could be invested collectively in agriculture including potential cassava production while protecting members’ savings and maintaining the VSLA’s social protection functions.

Such investment could enable the group to purchase seeds and other agricultural inputs, expand production, generate additional income, and reinvest proceeds into future livelihood activities.

The approach reflects the BLP Community Resilience Pathway – From Vulnerability to Sustainable Livelihoods, through which long-term community engagement progresses from strengthening vulnerable families to building community institutions, financial inclusion, productive agriculture, and sustainable livelihoods.

The Rosint milestone demonstrates an important lesson: saving is not the destination. It can become the foundation for investment, enterprise, food security, and greater economic resilience.

As BLPSL continues supporting the women of Rosint, the goal is to help the VSLA evolve from a community savings group into an increasingly resilient rural economic platform—owned and driven by the women themselves.
