VSLA Smart Agriculture Initiative
From Community Savings to Sustainable Livelihoods
The initiative grew from BLP’s long-term engagement with vulnerable families in Sierra Leone. Beginning in 2016 with the Meet the Gap (MTG) Schooling Program, which supported children and families affected by the Ebola crisis, BLP recognized that improving children’s wellbeing also required strengthening the economic resilience of their households. This led to the formation of BLP Mothers’ Clubs, followed by the introduction of VSLAs to help mothers and caregivers develop a culture of saving, financial literacy, access to community-based credit, and greater economic independence.
VSLA Smart Agriculture Initiative
The VSLA Smart Agriculture Initiative represents the next stage of that journey. Rather than creating new groups solely around agriculture, BLP builds upon existing community savings structures and introduces agriculture as a pathway for members to turn savings, collective action, and local resources into productive economic opportunities. Participating farmers receive practical support in improved farming practices, farm management, financial literacy, and enterprise development while learning together through community demonstration farms.
The BLP Community Resilience Pathway
This evolution forms part of the BLP Community Resilience Pathway – From Vulnerability to Sustainable Livelihoods, an approach that recognizes that sustainable development happens progressively: supporting vulnerable people, strengthening families, building trusted community institutions, expanding economic opportunity, and ultimately enabling communities to become more resilient and self-reliant.
The initiative is currently being implemented in Mano and Rosint communities in Gbanti Chiefdom, Bombali District, Sierra Leone, where groundnut farming serves as an entry point for demonstrating the model. In Mano, community leaders and stakeholders provided land for a 4.5-acre demonstration farm, reflecting the trust and partnership developed between BLP and the community since 2016. The demonstration sites provide practical spaces where farmers can learn, test improved practices, monitor production, and share knowledge with other community members.
Our Vision
The vision of the VSLA Smart Agriculture Initiative is to:
Through collaboration with communities, agricultural authorities, and development partners, BLP seeks to strengthen the model, measure its impact, and progressively expand successful approaches to other vulnerable rural communities.
