In the heart of Bamenda, Cameroon, a celebration of hope and environmental stewardship unfolded on May 16, 2025. Bright Light Projects (BLP), in partnership with New Vision for an Eco-friendly Environment, launched the transformative “Reforestation Hope” project at CBC Menda in Mile 3 Nkwen. This initiative, also taking root in Makeni, Sierra Leone, is a bold step toward combating deforestation, restoring degraded landscapes, and empowering communities through sustainable conservation.
The launch event was filled with energy as pupils, school administrators, and representatives from BLP and New Vision came together. The day kicked off with inspiring talks that highlighted the urgent need for reforestation and the devastating impacts of unchecked deforestation. Students listened intently, their curiosity sparked by lessons on how trees safeguard soil, preserve biodiversity, and combat climate change. The real magic happened when they rolled up their sleeves for a hands-on tree-planting session, turning knowledge into action.
Shing Praise Wandia, BLP’s Program Manager, set the tone with a heartfelt introduction to the project’s mission. “This is about more than planting trees, it is about planting hope,” Wandia said. “At Bright Light Projects, we believe healthy environments and thriving communities go hand in hand. By restoring 100 hectares of degraded land in Bamenda and Makeni with native trees, we’re building a sustainable future together.” Wandia outlined the project’s ambitious goals: developing forest management plans with local communities, equipping residents with conservation skills, creating sustainable income opportunities tied to forest resources, and raising awareness about the power of reforestation.
One pupil, eyes bright with determination, shared, “I learned why trees matter for our planet and how to plant them properly. I’m going to share this with my family and plant more at home!” The headteacher of CBC Menda echoed this sentiment, expressing deep gratitude: “This project is a game-changer for our school. Thanks to BLP and New Vision, our students are not just learning, they’re becoming stewards of the environment.
The Reforestation Hope project addresses critical challenges in Bamenda and Makeni, where deforestation from agricultural expansion and unsustainable fuelwood collection has led to soil erosion, biodiversity loss, and economic hardship. By planting native trees and fostering community-led conservation, BLP and New Vision aim to reverse these trends and create lasting change.
