Bright Light Projects Sierra Leone (BLP) marked World Environment Day 2025 with a vibrant environmental awareness session and a powerful radio discussion at Binkolo Catholic Junior Secondary School and Radio New Song in Makeni, respectively. Held under the global theme “End Plastic Pollution”, the events underscored the critical role of youth in combating plastic pollution and fostering sustainable communities.
On June 5, 2025, BLP organized an engaging environmental awareness session at Binkolo Catholic Junior Secondary School, bringing together students, teachers, and community members. The session focused on the importance of environmental protection, the detrimental effects of plastic pollution on ecosystems, and practical steps pupils can take to contribute to a cleaner, healthier community. Topics included reducing single-use plastics, proper waste disposal, and community clean-up initiatives.
Students were highly enthusiastic, actively participating in discussions and sharing ideas on reducing plastic waste. Teachers played a pivotal role, emphasizing the need for sustained environmental education to shape environmentally conscious citizens. The interactive format fostered a sense of ownership among pupils, empowering them to take action in their daily lives.
Later that day, BLP hosted a dynamic radio conversation on Radio New Song in Makeni, titled “The Role of Youth in Ending Plastic Pollution.” The discussion featured a panel of passionate advocates: The panelists explored critical topics, including:
- What is plastic pollution? Defining plastic pollution and its severe impacts on marine life, soil health, and human well-being.
- Why is it a threat? Highlighting how plastic waste clogs waterways, harms biodiversity, and contributes to long-term environmental degradation.
- Youth as leaders: The essential role of young people in driving awareness campaigns, organizing clean-up activities, and advocating for policy changes.
- Challenges and opportunities: Addressing barriers such as limited resources and awareness, while identifying opportunities like community partnerships and innovative recycling initiatives.
The discussion was broadcast to a wide audience, amplifying the message across Makeni and beyond. Listeners were encouraged to rethink their plastic consumption and support youth-led environmental initiatives.
The events concluded with a resounding message from the panelists: “Youth are not just leaders of tomorrow; we are the change-makers of today. Let’s rise, act, and say NO to plastic pollution!” This call to action inspired attendees and listeners to take immediate steps toward reducing plastic waste, from adopting reusable alternatives to participating in local clean-up drives.
World Environment Day, celebrated annually on June 5, is the United Nations’ principal platform for promoting environmental awareness and action. Established in 1973, it engages millions worldwide in efforts to protect the planet. The 2025 theme, “End Plastic Pollution,” addresses a pressing global issue, as plastic waste continues to overwhelm landfills, pollute oceans, and threaten biodiversity. BLP’s activities aligned with this global movement, contributing to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 14 (Life Below Water) and SDG 15 (Life on Land).
Bright Light Projects Sierra Leone’s World Environment Day 2025 activities reflect the organization’s broader mission to promote environmental sustainability and empower communities. By engaging students and broadcasting critical discussions, BLP not only raised awareness but also built a foundation for long-term environmental stewardship. The organization’s focus on youth empowerment aligns with its advocacy for skills development and capacity building, as noted on their website (Bright Light Projects).
BLP encourages communities, schools, and individuals to join the movement to reduce plastic waste and promote sustainable practices. Simple actions, such as using reusable bags, supporting recycling programs, and educating others, can make a significant impact. Together, we can create a cleaner, healthier Sierra Leone and contribute to a world free from the scourge of plastic pollution.
