On June 12, 2025, Bright Light Projects (BLP), in partnership with Local Youth Corner Cameroon (LOYOC), launched a transformative initiative in Fundong, Northwest Region, Cameroon: “Breaking Barriers, Building Peace: Integrating Young Women’s Voices into Fundong’s Traditional Councils.” This one-day training workshop and radio program marked a significant step toward gender equality and inclusive governance in the region.
For too long, young women’s voices have been sidelined in Fundong’s traditional councils, which shaped the community’s future. BLP and LOYOC united to address this gap, empowering young women with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to engage in these vital decision-making spaces. The workshop gathered a dynamic group of young women, equipping them with tools for conflict resolution, leadership development, and effective advocacy to dismantle barriers and foster inclusive governance.
“There is a need for youths, particularly young women, to be involved in decision-making at all levels,” said Mr. Shing Praise, the Program Manager for BLP Cameroon. He emphasized the importance of inclusive traditional councils to ensure policies reflect the diverse needs of the community.
Participant Fang Sandrine shared, “The training had a profound impact on my life. The knowledge gained has inspired me to take action, and I am committed to applying the lessons learned while empowering other young girls to report cases of gender-based violence.” Her testimony highlights the initiative’s real-world impact, inspiring a new generation of advocates.
A complementary radio program amplified the project’s reach, featuring interviews with community leaders and powerful testimonials. It sparked conversations across Fundong, promoting gender equality and women’s critical role in building peaceful societies.
Breaking Barriers, Building Peace is more than a one-day event, it’s a commitment to a more equitable future. By empowering young women to advocate for their rights and participate in local councils, BLP and LOYOC are driving sustainable change. The initiative also strengthened community leaders’ capacity to sustain gender equality efforts, ensuring inclusive leadership that reflects the entire community’s needs.
Bright Light Projects extends heartfelt gratitude to LOYOC, local partners, and supporters for making this initiative possible. Together, we are illuminating the path to a more just and equitable world, one community at a time.
