Today, Bright Light Projects (BLP) Sierra Leone hosted a live radio program on Amzas Radio 96.9 FM, located along Field Road in Makeni, to commemorate World Humanitarian Day, observed annually on August 19. The United Nations-endorsed theme for 2025, “Strengthening Global Solidarity and Empowering Local Communities”, underscores the power of collective action and local leadership in addressing global crises.
During the broadcast, the BLP Sierra Leone team highlighted the significance of World Humanitarian Day, reflecting on its origins and the critical role of humanitarian workers. The discussion acknowledged the growing challenges facing humanitarian systems, including underfunding, heightened risks to aid personnel, and strained global coordination. BLP also expressed deep sympathy for the over 240 humanitarian workers who lost their lives last year, as well as the countless others injured or mistreated while serving communities in need. Their sacrifices underscore the urgent need for global solidarity to protect and support those on the frontlines.
The program spotlighted BLP’s recent initiative in Kamabai town, Biriwa Limba Chiefdom, where a free computer training program empowered teachers and pupils with digital literacy skills. This effort exemplifies how fostering local capacity through education and skill-building creates lasting resilience, aligning with the 2025 theme of empowering communities.
In parallel, BLP Cameroon marked World Humanitarian Day with a similar radio program on CBC Radio in Bamenda. The broadcast highlighted BLP’s unwavering commitment to rebuilding broken communities through empowerment and entrepreneurship, showcasing initiatives that promote self-reliance and sustainable development.
Bright Light Projects encourages everyone to observe World Humanitarian Day on August 19 by reflecting on the theme “Strengthening Global Solidarity and Empowering Local Communities” and supporting initiatives that amplify local voices and enhance local capacities. Together, we can build a more resilient and equitable world.
