Makeni, Sierra Leone – November 18, 2025 – In a bold step toward digital inclusion, Bright Light Projects Sierra Leone (BLPSL) has officially launched its free computer training program at Success Royal Academy in Makeni, responding to a formal request from the school’s Proprietor. The inaugural session, held today, was a resounding success and met with enthusiastic praise from both pupils and staff, marking the beginning of a transformative two-week initiative designed to equip young learners with foundational digital skills.
During the first session, pupils were introduced to essential computer basics, including identifying key hardware components, understanding core operations, and practicing safe startup and shutdown procedures. The hands-on exercises sparked immediate engagement, with learners demonstrating remarkable enthusiasm and active participation. This practical approach directly addresses a critical gap highlighted by the school administration: many students have long studied computer theory without ever gaining real-world experience. “We’re immensely grateful to BLPSL for bridging this divide,” said a school representative. “This training will empower our pupils not just to understand technology, but to harness it for their futures.” BLPSL remains steadfast in its commitment to empowering Sierra Leone’s youth through digital education, mentorship, and life-building skills, with plans to deepen this partnership with Success Royal Academy throughout the program.
Building on the resounding success of BLPSL’s previous Free One-Month Holiday Basic Computer Skills Training in Kamabai Town, Bombali District (July–August 2025), which impacted over 860 teachers and students, many of whom had never touched a computer before, this new program extends the organization’s proven model to urban-adjacent areas like Makeni. In Kamabai, participants mastered advanced tools such as Microsoft Word for document creation, PowerPoint for dynamic presentations, and Publisher for creative designs, culminating in a certification ceremony on October 13, 2025, that celebrated their newfound confidence and competence. Testimonials from Kamabai graduates, including teachers who now integrate tech into classrooms and young women who advocated for program expansion, underscored the life-changing potential of such initiatives. By incorporating similar foundational elements in Makeni, BLPSL is scaling its impact, ensuring continuity in skill-building while adapting to the unique needs of Success Royal Academy’s pupils.
At its core, this training stresses the urgent need to engage young minds in bridging the digital divide—a pivotal tool for Africa’s economic transformation. In Sierra Leone, where only 32% of the population has internet access and just 20% of rural schools (with even fewer urban ones facing similar constraints) boast functional digital devices, the absence of practical ICT skills perpetuates cycles of underdevelopment. UNICEF data reveals that only 15% of rural schools offer reliable internet connectivity, leaving vast swaths of Africa’s youth, 42% of Sierra Leone’s population under 15, disconnected from the global digital economy. Yet, as Africa’s tech ecosystem surges, with projections from the African Union estimating that digital skills could add $180 billion to the continent’s GDP by 2025 through enhanced productivity and innovation, initiatives like BLPSL’s are indispensable. By fostering early proficiency in computer operations and beyond, we are not merely teaching tools; we are igniting entrepreneurial spirits, enabling remote learning, and preparing a generation to lead Africa’s digital renaissance. Engaging these young minds today ensures they become tomorrow’s innovators, job creators, and economic drivers, transforming resource-rich nations like Sierra Leone into hubs of sustainable growth.
BLPSL’s expansion to Makeni exemplifies our mission to rebuild communities through targeted education and advocacy. As the two-week program unfolds, we anticipate the same ripple effects seen in Kamabai: boosted self-reliance, improved academic outcomes, and stronger community ties. We invite media, partners, donors, and stakeholders to follow this journey and collaborate in amplifying digital literacy across Sierra Leone and beyond. Together, we can turn the digital divide into a bridge of opportunity, powering Africa’s economic future.
